During World War I, Reiger Burg, located at the western entrance to the Ypres Salient, became an important British military stronghold. Beginning in July 1917, the castle served, among other things, as headquarters for the 12th Howitzer Brigade, while artillery batteries were deployed in and around Reiger Burg. They provided support for the battles at Hooge, among other engagements. The estate also included a military camp, defensive works, and a medical post. During the Third Battle of Ypres, Reiger Burg additionally served as an assembly and staging area for troops and tanks.
