“A castle estate with centuries of history”
Reiger Burg Estate has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The current small castle was built in 1843 by the Terrier family, a noble family from northern France, in an elegant eclectic style. The surrounding park was landscaped in the English landscape style.
Timeline
Before World War I—ca. 1900
Before the war, the castle (on Veurnesteenweg) was owned by Ph. Vandenberghe-Fraeys of Ypres.
During World War I
During World War I, the small castle was bombed and its roof sustained severe damage. Despite the destruction, the structure remained standing, a silent witness to the dramatic events.
Na WOI – circa 1925
The estate passed into the hands of the Mouton family and then to a sister order.

Just like De Drie Torren Castle, this castle (on Veurnesteenweg) also appeared on the British Army’s staff maps. From the adjacent stables, a British cannon barked with clockwork precision at the enemy positions a few kilometers away. The response was immediate, and what had once been a magnificent country estate was reduced to rubble.

The Mouton brothers, who lived at Reigerburg Castle in Brielen, were driving at night between Ciney and Courrière (province of Namur). Suddenly, a herd of wild rabbits ran across the road, chased by a badger. The driver was unable to avoid the badger and hit it. Here we see the animal, which weighed between 35 and 40 kg.
